Chapter 11 - Unraveling the Knot
Leila was sitting on the bed thinking about that one burning kiss. Was it just an effort to hide? For cover, as they said in jargon?
But it seemed like Clay had put more passion into it than necessary. When all was said and done, she was no expert in following people, but she thought that a kiss used as cover could be given by simply touching one's lips to those of another. What happened between them, however, was a real kiss in the fullest sense that had left her dazed and her head full of absurdly romantic thoughts. She couldn't wait for him to come out of the shower to see how he would act, but at the same time she was terrified. What if he acted as if nothing happened? Worse yet, what if it meant nothing to him? That hypothesis seemed more possible by the minute, especially because of that 'excuse me' said at the end. Who says excuse me after a kiss?
There was a knock at the door at the same instant that Clay came out of the bathroom with a towel around his waist.
He passed by without looking at her and went himself to open the door, taking a gun from under the pillow and hiding it behind his back. He froze on the threshold without saying anything for a long moment.
"Hello sugar," said a woman's voice. Leila stood behind Clay to see who was there.
It was a beautiful woman, tall, blond hair cut below the ears, broad shoulders, a voluptuous chest and pretty blue eyes. Leila immediately felt threatened by her.
Clay regained control of himself.
"Rebecca! What the hell are you doing here?"
"Oh, thank you for the warm welcome!" she said, smiling. She didn't seem angry, maybe amused. She looked her directly in the eyes, then up and down as though subjecting her to an x-ray. Leila looked down, embarrassed.
Then her gaze went from the towel around Clay's waist to the young woman seated on the bed.
"Well, look at what a pretty picture, this must be the civilian you brought with you!"
"Oh, yes,â he said. He seemed as embarrassed as Leila, maybe more. "Uh, this is Leila Lane. Leila, this is Rebecca Doyle."
"His girlfriend," added Rebecca.
Clay stiffened. What was Rebecca doing? She'd never introduced herself to anyone as his significant other, and the words girlfriend and boyfriend had never come out of their mouths in the nine years that they'd been seeing each other. They werenât part of their vocabulary. He was shocked.
Leila's blood froze in her veins. She inadvertently squeezed her hands on the bedspread and painfully bit the inside of her cheek, as if the physical pain could distract her from the emotional. Of course, she started thinking, like a man like that could be interested in you, stupid, naive Leila, that's exactly his kind of woman, it couldn't be any other way.
She stood up, putting on her most indifferent face.
"Pleasure to meet you, Ms. Doyle." Not able to
